I met Belinda Jane a few years ago at the Indieheaven sponsored Christian Music Conference, ”CIA Summit” in Franklin, Tennessee. Her quick smile and Georgia drawl immediately put me at ease. We recently discussed some new developments in her ministry and her life.
Transparent: Tell me about this new phone calling campaign/ministry – ”A Call a Day”
I was talking with my manager Sue Ross, and we were trying to come up with a unique way to reach people. While we were chatting I got a telemarketing call, and we both laughed at how obnoxious those calls can be. The reason the calls are challenging, is that the person on the other end of the phone is wanting something from you… Sometimes those calls are coming from your friends and family. I get calls all the time from people to sponsor something or run an errand. We joked that it would be great if you got phone calls from people that JUST wanted to wish you a good day, and encourage you and tell you that God loved you, and that’s how the “A Call a Day” campaign started.
The big thing for me is to reach people, in this case, I’m taking a different road. I’m NOT trying to get them to pray the prayer of salvation or trying to ”Save” them, but just do what Jesus said to do… “Love Others.”
I got started quickly after that conversation.
Transparent: How has the response been?
Well, I really thought I would have had more response from onlookers. I haven’t received many comments on the blog. Everyone seems to think it’s a great idea when I tell them about it, but I’m not hearing much more than that.
Transparent: Overall how has it been going?
It’s been very interesting, and I’ve been surprised at how many people aren’t answering their phones!! I will leave a message if they aren’t home, however I always feel a little down after that, (because I would really rather talk to them).
There have been some really interesting calls though. I’ve been able to pray with people over the phone, and I’ve talked with some receptive and upbeat people. I get very excited when I get someone live on the phone!
Transparent: What are you learning?
Hmmm…. (Laughs). Quite a bit. The first thing that I learned is that it takes a lot of phone calls to get someone on the phone! (Laughs)
Really though… This call campaign has expanded my faith. I’m learning that when God gives you something to do, we don’t have to know what the end result is going to be.
I thought that by making the calls, I would be getting instant feedback from others, but that hasn’t been the case, and I’m learning that THAT’s ok. I’ve been thinking about the parable of sowing seeds, and I’m learning that I’m just the one throwing out the seeds, and God’s responsible for watering, nurturing and watching it grow.
It seems that in most ministries, people are doing all of those things (or trying to). In this ministry I have to have great faith that God is going to do something with this effort. I really feel that I’m supposed to be doing this 7 days a week so if your readers would like me to contact someone (it’s all anonymous) they can send me an e-mail.
Transparent: How can we follow along?
I am updating the blog daily. http://belindajanemusic.wordpress.com/
Transparent: I know you have some music news as well. Are you recording a new album?
Yes! I am working on a new project with Andrew Carlton (ACM Studios) in Nashville, and I’m executive producing my own record! We are in the middle of production, and we are actually working on that this week. I’m very excited about it, it’s kind of a crossover album. It is taking my former CCM style and putting it into a folk-rock format, with a dash of country and blues, because that is where my roots are. It is not so much bible thumping, as just positive good music that just points people in the right direction. The current name of the project is “Move”. The concept is for people to be involved and active in their families, neighborhoods, non-profits, churches, and ministries. I’m hoping that the album encourages people to serve in some way!
Transparent: How has God been blowing your mind lately?
God always blows my mind… One way is by letting me be at the Bluebird on Thursday!! He’s showing me some very special things this week. I have a huge peace with my aunt’s recent death. She had been suffering with Alzheimers and in many ways, she has been alone in this world. She’s home now with Him and she’s in His arms now. He’s with me, and she’s with Him, so she’s with me!
You can see Belinda Jane live at the Bluebird Cafe this Thursday!
