In Living Color – Lisa McIntosh

Although people learn in many ways, learning styles can be summarized as either auditory, tactile (learning by doing) and visual. Most people learn through a combination of the three, but often one style dominates the others.  I never really thought of myself as a visual learner until recently when our office transitioned to a paperless environment.  I found myself often repeating the phrase, “Just show me.”

One of my daughters has always been very visual.  While learning to read, she struggled with words containing silent letters such as night by trying to pronounce every letter including “g” and “h”.  After a friend suggested that I choose books for her that contained lots of pictures, I was amazed at the difference it made. As a young adult, she still relies on the use of flash cards when reviewing for tests.  She loves photography and art.

A friend recently shared with me how God was speaking to her afresh through the association of colors with the scriptures.  She related colors to the pastures, waters, shadow of death, etc. in the twenty-third Psalm.  While reading a passage describing heaven, she related to the colors of the golden streets and pearly gates.

As spring begins to show its face, I am always amazed at the colorful palette that appears and the refreshing effect it has on the soul.  I am so glad that God chose to speak to people like my daughter, my friend and myself in a way that we could understand and relate.  From the green pastures, to the pearly gates, to the great drops of blood, my God has chosen to speak in living color.

What is your learning style?  I am sure that He speaks your language!
