History in The Making – Tom Whiteman

The airwaves are filled with news about an event that is coming up quickly, literally “History in the Making”: A new Commander-in-Chief will be sworn into the Office of the President of the United States. Younger than most of his predecessors and the first African-American elected president, he reportedly has new and proactive approaches to the burdens of the office.

According to reports, legions of people from all over the country, and even the world, will be converging on the capitol to glimpse this event, some as far as two miles away viewing via giant video screens, but present for this auspicious occasion.

I watch this build-up with a modest amusement that comes, not so much from what will happen that day, but really what will happen on the day after, the week after, and even the four years that follow.

The wheels of progress turn slowly, for the most part. And while the whole of the government is largely standing ready to back this man, he remains just that: A man. Not that I don’t respect him; I do. I have tuned in on many occasions to hear what he has to say, and while his ideas may be wonderful, and his plans may or may not be flawless, the one thing that remains a key factor to his success will be the willingness of others to follow.

Obviously, if no one follows, there is no change.

If no one listens, no one hears.

Change can only happen when men unite for more than a passing moment – band together to do the right thing and are willing to see their charge through to the end.

Almost 232 years ago, 56 men put pen to paper to effect a change on this soil that was based on an untried ideal; to forge a country, where all men are created equal and that in God we should trust. I have a certainty within me that most people still yearn for a creator, God, and believe that he created us to live together, free to worship Him.

Two thousand years ago, Christ gave up His home in glory to dwell with man here on this Earth. He lived a life representative of a change in the accepted, normal ways of thinking and the stagnant beliefs of the current leadership of His time. After suffering death and humiliation on a crude and tortuous cross, He was raised to life and presented Himself to his Disciples, ultimately charging them to carry his message on to the ends of the Earth. A charge that each of us should still be carrying on to everyone we meet with the same dedication and passion, no matter which way the tides of government may turn.

Pray for our new leadership. Pray for the legions watching on that day and for our country. But pray even more fervently for a world that still needs to know the love of God in a deep and meaningful way.

We often hear the words “God Bless America,” and may they ring true. But more than that, may we all accept the blessings that He has given us already. When that happens, will we truly see “History in the Making!”
