“It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching.” St. Francis of Assisi
My boss has some views of most Christians that are unfortunately not uncommon. He has been burned pretty hard in business by people that have professed to be followers of Jesus. He told me that the times it frustrates him the most is when someone goes out of their way to talk about their faith, but their actions show otherwise. He has made some jokes about it… “When they put the ‘Jesus Fish’ on their invoices, beware!”
Recently one of our clients needed some information from an old vendor, and suggested to us that the relationship with that vendor ended poorly. My boss called the vendor and left a message for him about wanting this information, and he got a call back later that night. The vendor said “well, even though I technically don’t have to give this to you, I have prayed about it, and think it’s the right thing to do.” He told us that although the client owed him some money, he really felt that he was supposed to release the info to us. “No reason to hold you hostage over a bad situation that I had with someone else” he said.
When my boss told me this story, I said “Score one for the Christians”. He laughed and said “I know you have your website, and you live it (your faith), but you never come in here and force your beliefs down any of our throats.”
That may be the best compliment I have received this year. He has notice my faith through my actions and the way I live, instead of through me saying anything.
Later we talked about what our client had said about this vendor, and how his actions were contrary to our expectations. In this simple act of following his heart–his faith, this guy witnessed to us both (and now you).
It was a great reminder to keep my mouth closed and let my actions be my example, as opposed to the words I say.

As “the boss” I wouldn’t say I’m wary of “all Christians.” As with anything, I’m wary of people of any stripe that are “all hat, no cattle.”

Jason,
One of the most fascinating things about the ministry of Christ on earth as that those that followed Him, followed out of a desire to BE with Him. He didn’t have to give a sales pitch; Yes, he called the disciples, but the crowds, the multitudes, the healings… they were all seeking Him, for he “walked his talk”. And when the rich young ruler told Him he wanted to follow him, he didn’t like the conditions that Jesus laid out for him: “leave all you have, and come follow Me.” The ruler walked away, choosing his possessions over a life in the footsteps of the Master. Jesus didn’t go chase him down, or deliver a sermon as to why he needed to do those things. The plan had been laid out for him, and Christ knew that the ruler’s heart had not been yielded, and he was more into having Christ as a jewel in his own crown, and not AS his crown.
I would love to share this in an upcoming podcast, if that is alright with you; Email me with your answer, and I pray blessings on your head!
In His Love
