The release of 15 hostages in the Columbian jungle has been an amazing story. There were three American men in the group. According to a CNN report on July 11, “The men carried with them a metal lock, a bullet and a chess board made of cardboard -- small items that are reminders of the years they spent away from their families, cut off from the world outside the jungle, seeing only fellow hostages and their captors, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Focusing on The Voyage and Not Your Expectations

Recently I was blessed to spend the weekend with a great friend. During a conversation he mentioned he was able to pay off ALL of his outstanding debt last year. To accomplish this, he moved in with some roommates, worked 2 jobs and did some serious negotiating with his creditors, and was able to 'stroke a check' for the final piece of debt late last fall.

C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N.S “Digital”

I confess-I’m reading the July-August issue of the AARP Bulletin. I’ve just listened to the NBC Nightly News, and all of the major newspapers are defaulting and shutting down printing presses. The Chicago Tribune is closing, and their high rise office building is for sale as well as the Chicago Cubs! Someone said, “If you [...]

The Shortest ‘Unconfirmed’ Prayer In History

I gave the benediction at my high school graduation in 1989. This seemed like a really odd thing to do at the time. I didn’t attend church much, and I didn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus. My early skill in public speaking and ability to impact my fellow classmates lead someone [...]

Will You Miss Me?

Will you miss me when I’m gone? Years ago, my wife and I became friends with a young couple at our church. They had been married perhaps a year or so when we first met them. He had grown up as an only child from a family in Atlanta. She had been the only child of a couple in a small town in south Georgia.

A Peaceful Look Back at my Chaotic Past

A couple of months ago my husband Zale and I were cleaning out the bonus room because we were converting it to his home office. I found something I wrote shortly after 9/11 and I hadn't read it in a very long time.

C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N.S “Accumulating”

Having cleared out my Dad and Mom’s house has freshly reminded me of the vanity of accumulating things. They only had the very basics, but fifty-seven years of marriage yields much stuff.
