Don Piper had just left a pastor’s conference in South Texas. He was driving home in his 1986 Ford Escort, when he entered onto a narrow two-lane bridge. An 18-wheeler crossed the center line and hit him head on and rolled over his vehicle. Four inches of Don’s femur were never found as well as other bones in his arms. He was declared dead instantly, and a tarp was placed over his body. EMT personnel focused on other victims that the truck had side swiped.
Ninety minutes later, a pastor friend of Don’s came upon the accident. He walked down the long line of traffic and felt compelled to pray for the man in the Escort. The state troopers kept insisting the man was dead, but the pastor insisted that he pray for the man in the Escort. He crawled into the back of the Escort, placed his hand on Don’s shoulder, began to pray, and sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus“. Suddenly, a voice from the shattered body began singing with him.
The pastor yelled to the EMT crew that the man was alive! The Jaws of Life were called, and the shattered body of Don Piper was rushed to the hospital. Again, the prognosis was that Don would not make it through the night. Another pastor came and called for an all night prayer vigil.
You must read Ninety Minutes in Heaven at your earliest convenience. It is the most inspiring and riveting book that I’ve read in a very long time. You will have a new understanding of heaven, a new appreciation of the power of prayer, and a new appreciation of why God allows bad things to happen to good people!
